Reggae Dancehall evolved around the early 80's with artists such as Yellowman, Super Cat, Barrington Levy and others who went on to become the Roots Radics. The style is characterized by a DJ singing and rapping or toasting over raw and danceable reggae music, popularly known as "ridims." The rhythm in dancehall is much faster than in reggae, due to a greater use and mix of drum machines and sounds.
